I have my doubts. A more likely motivation for taking these slides was to chronicle the anomalous cases that came to the hospital where he worked. This would include the lab work of the pathologist as well as the work of the chief surgeon. This would also explain the wide range of unusual conditions represented, including this severe case of scrotal hernia. Physician and artist alike, it seems, are interested in the extravagances of nature.
