Fordyce Barker (1819-1891) was the family physician for Ulysses Grant and attended him in his death. Barker is best known for his work, The Puerperal Diseases: Clinical Lectures Delivered at Bellevue Hospital. (first edition: New York, Appleton, 1874).

Edmund Randolph Peaslee is best remembered for his writings on ovariotomy, particularly his book Ovarian tumors: their pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, especially by ovariotomy. (New York, D. Appleton & company, 1872).

Both men were past presidents of the New York State Medical Society and the New York Academy of Medicine. Both men were professors at the Medical School of Maine, Bowdoin College. Both men also held professorships at Bellevue Hospital Medical College.
