Shirley T. and Zelma I.
I picture the doctor as a lively gentleman who, judging from the flawless script of the
index placards, was a classicist in his habits. I also believe he was a compassionate man.
Nuding the body before the camera can only bring anxiety and yet all of his subjects
appear quite relaxed. It appears that considerable psychological preparation was given to
make his patients as comfortable as possible before photographing. A few even manage to
wilt forth a smile. In this slide of two children, probably suffering from leukemia, one is
laughing over some amusement the good doctor provided. When the subjects are
made to pose on a chair the doctor often takes pains to drape a blanket against the
hardness, and yet he is never so yielding as to sacrifice the time necessary to make a
masterful image.
