Tintype of a subject possibly suffering a prolonged epileptic seizure of the temporal lobe. Involuntary movements of the man made photographing difficult and the photographer used a fast shutter to capture a sharp image, but this resulted in a severely under exposed image (corrected here by a photo editor). Among the autonomic effects of a partial epilepsy involving the temporal lobe is an epigastric sensation that radiates to the throat. Over time, neuronal damage and auditory, gustatory and olfactory hallucinations can lead to an interictal psychosis that can be misdiagnosed as schizophrenia.
