Woodward is important for broad advances he made in microscopy, and specifically for his independent discovery of the use of aniline dyes for tissue staining. In 1862 he joined the staff of Surgeon-General Hammond and equipped the newly founded Army Medical Museum with a microscope which he ingeniously adapted for photographic work.
