Notes :
For thirty years Després was surgeon to the Lourcine, a venereal hospital for indigent women of Paris. He was a skilled operator and prolific writer, published monographs on poverty and the prostitutional diseases, and held political office. Unfortunately, he was also an outspoken obstructionist against the advances of Pasteur and Lister, styling himself as the "Vestal du Pus Français." His opponents simply referred to him as "the dirty doctor." Today he is remembered only for his edition of La Fontaine's Fables published in 1892 (Paris: Rouquette).
