First in a series of articles on hemimelia of the lower arm which appeared in the Revue during 1871 (vide: Leroy, pp. 80-82; and Deffaux, pp. 106-108). The specimen photograph depicts a birth defect, the limb stump of a 10 month old who died of pneumonia at Salpêtrière. The second illustration is a drawing by Rosapelly of the underlying bone structure, the ulna and radius terminating abruptly in a conjoined articulation shaped like the wings of a maple samaras. Bourneville wrote the first section of the paper, providing the clinical picture, and Troisier reported the autopsy in the second half. The baby and his mother were transferred out of the maternity wards of Salpêtrière when it was bombed by the Prussians in January 1871. 31 missiles struck the hospital complex. Reading between the lines, Bourneville intimates that the stress of the siege affected the mother's lactation and led to the malnourishment and infirmity of le petit malade.
