The patient's death in 1883 afforded Beecher the opportunity of an autopsy and follow-up study, concentrating on the diseased tongue and larynx of his subject and publishing his findings in the Transactions of the Pathological Society of Philadelphia for that year. He arrived at his diagnosis after consulting with Duhring.
