In 1821, Galloni was appointed superintendent to San Lazzaro, a centuries old hospital located in Reggio Emilia. He was a follower of Pinel, and one of the first alienists in Italy to advance the moral treatment of the mentally ill. Zani also presided over the asylum, was appointed its superintendent in 1871, and served for just two years until his death at age 37.
