Il processo della fotografia, istantanea permette oggidì di seguire istante per istante l'evoluzione di una espressione, e di offrire, allo scienziato come all'artista, tutti gli elementi della mimica; basterà ne ricordi uno soltanto, dal quale levai una immagine (vedi la Tav. After serving as a medical officer during the war of Italian independence, Tebaldi took a sabbatical to research the insane asylums of France, Belgium, Britain, Sweden and Germany, reporting his experiences in a paper titled, Delle istituzioni che reggono la vita interna degli asili per gli alienati (1864). Tebaldi was brilliant. There is no better reason to learn Italian than to have the ability to read his book, Ragione e Pazzia (1884), which is a compilation of his thoughts and anecdotes on the subject of genius, reason and madness. Sadly, none of his writings were translated into English and his books are now extremely rare.
Plates III and XXXV reproduce two lithographs (Plates 25 and 80) published in Alexander Morison's atlas, The physiognomy of mental diseases (1843 edition). Plate XXIII reproduces a steel engraving (Plate 4) published in Maximilian Leidesdorf's monograph, Lehrbuch der psychischen Krankheiten (1860). Plate XXXII reproduces a photogravure (Plate 21) from volume 2 of Bourneville and Regnard, Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière (1878). Tebaldi provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the physiognomy of insanity, but it is odd that he makes no reference to the clinical photographs of Dr. Hugh Welch Diamond.
