Notes :

From inauspicious trials as a medical student—his graduate thesis written off by Recklinghausen—Unna matured into a prominent researcher outside of academia, one who contributed several original descriptions to the modern dermatological canon. In Garrison & Morton he is described, "Unna, short in stature but a giant among dermatologists" and one of the "most eminent" in his profession. After completing postgraduate work with Hebra in Vienna, Unna returned to private practice in Hamburg where he built a 40 bed private skin hospital in the suburb, Eimsbüttel. A laboratory and dormitory were added and by 1888 the hospital had grown in reputation into a leading research and teaching institute with 23 students dedicated to a specialty in dermatology. In 1907 Unna helped to establish a department of dermatology at the University Hospital Hamburg and served as its first director. He founded the journal that published this and other papers on seborrheic eczema, his most important work.
