Da es mir möglich war, die Photolithographie, eine Methode der Abbildung, welche Prof. Rüdinger bereits auch für die Ohrenheilkunde in seinem Atlas des menschlichen Gehörorgans in so glücklicher Weise verwerthet hat, für diese Arbeit zu benutzen, so können auf der beiliegenden Tafel die Durchschnitte einer Reihe von Schläfenbeinen in getreuer Abbildung vorgelegt werden, welche in ihrer Form und Grösse bedeutende Differenzen geboten haben.

Der Zweck dieser Abbildungen ist zunächst, das Lageverhältniss der Fossa sigmoidea und insbesondere derjenigen Stelle in der Fossa vor Augen zu führen, welche der äusseren Oberfläche des Processus mastoideus am nächsten kommt. —Page 136.

First treatise in Bezold's corpus on mastoiditis, powered by his ten years of experience in private practice. He begins with an inquiry into the etiology of brain abcess and finds that nearly a third of the reported cases originated within the middle ear and mastoid process. Descriptions for eight axial slices of temporal bone follow, represented by the photographic plate and thus demonstrating the extreme variability in the comparative morphology of the bone, even in lateral sections from the same skull (Figs. 5 & 6). There is irregularity in the definition of the cancellous structures as well, but only Fig. 8 identifies a pathology, possibly the first published photograph of sclerotic mastoiditis. He cites Rüdinger's "Atlas des menschlichen Gehörorgans" for the inspiration of the photograph. Bezold had access to over 100 temporal bone specimens provided by Rüdinger, director of the prosection lab at the Anatomische Anstalt in Munich. He was at heart a statistician and prepared detailed tables of measurements for 48 of the specimens. This brought anatomical precision and clarity to trepanation and curetting procedures which he discusses at length, providing a thorough review of the literature and recommending improvements to the treatment of suppurative mastoiditis.
