Neuhauss, Richard (1907), Lehrbuch der Mikrophotographie. Leipzig : Hirzel (3rd edition) :

Offenbar gewann die Sucht, mit möglichst hohen Zahlen zu glänzen, die Oberhand über das klare Urteil.

Obviously the passion of the quest got the upper hand, with the glimmering of the highest possible goal winning out over clear judgement.

Taureck, Renata (1980), Die Bedeutung der Photographie für die medizinische Abbildung im 19. Jahrhundert. p. 204 :

Two photographic plates, mounted originals. That of plate 1 shows well executed shots of incremental enlargement (12 : 1 & 42 : 1), that of plate 2 shows experiments in maximum enlargement (3600 : 1 & 8750 : 1), in which the enlargement of the original negative, 175 : 1, is greatly enlarged again through photographic means. These shots are so unclear, that it is not easy to understand how the author could publish them as examples of photographs.
