McNutt was perplexed by the appearance of such a large gallstone in the colon as the one reported here, but it is now known to occur through cholecystocolic fistula and usually within the elderly female population. He does not provide the age of his patient, who was also suffering from uterine fibroids, but McNutt notes that in 1876, while traveling in Vermont, she was attacked by severe pain in her hepatic region.
